Background and Objectives

The aim of this study is to firstly establish mortality data following liver biopsy in the diagnosis of metastatic cancer in England. Secondly, this study will explore whether meaningful treatment is given following this diagnosis.

Method

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) is a national database that records information on elective and emergency care events in National Health Service secondary care services in England. From the 1st January 2010 to the 31st December 2019, 30,992 subjects were identified with cancer that has metastasised to the liver and had undergone a percutaneous liver biopsy. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the outcome of 14 and 30 day mortality following a liver biopsy for metastatic cancer to the liver.

Conclusion

This work is ongoing with the view to publication in the near future.
